about

All I Really Want

I often wish I could go back to the simple life with no bills to pay, only frogs to catch and jeans to wear out.  And this relates to having my own kids.  There’s something about playing in the creek, running through the forest and walking long distances down old dirt roads.  I suppose that experience still does exist when I think about it, and maybe that's what those experiences are for; to be able to somehow reconnect to it later in life when things get too complicated.

I used to live in the country near a house that had a huge pond.  The pond had lots of bass in it, and I loved to fish.  There was a problem though.  This pond had a really mean pair of swans that were pretty bent on laying the beats on anyone that wanted to fish.  "I'm out swimming with the swans" isn't what you think it is… it's not like a WITH the swans in a happy movie kind of way.  When I went fishing with a friend, one of us (most often it was me) would sometimes run to the opposite end of the pond to distract the swans so the other could fish for a bit.  The swans would chase the "bait" (me) aggressively, and I'd run or swim as fast as I could because I once heard that a swan broke the man that owned the pond’s arm and sent him to the hospital.  I swear that swan had teeth.  Perhaps that's where I first fell in love with danger…  What kid would ever want to go home on a hot summer afternoon when there was fish to catch and a swan to distract?

Tom spent some time on the floor huffing into a mic that was set up to distort.  It sounds like some kind of a percussive instrument.  The idea was that it was kids running and huffing as they chased each other through the forest.  The same mic on the floor recorded foot stomps and random coins and bolts dropping on the floor.

"I'll be there with the sun when the morning comes, I'll be there for hugs I can hold back floods, so close your eyes to sleep these promises I will keep, I'll be there with the sun when the morning comes" is from a lullaby I wrote for my oldest daughter many years ago.

Huh. I guess all I really want is more time...

lyrics

I heard you call my name, in a sentimental way now
I only cry when I can see the sky
On the old dirt gravel road, where the old church preacher sowed
And the days and night were all one in the same

I wish I could go back
To the distant and unpack
My memories so I could
Feel you again

I’d run back though the trees, catch frogs on worn out knees
I'll only come back when the sun goes down
Good luck finding me I'm gone, I'm out swimming with the swans now
And I'll only come back when the sun is down.

I'll be there with the sun when the morning comes, I'll be there for hugs I can hold back floods
So close your eyes to sleep these promises I'll keep I'll be there with the sun when the morning comes

All I really want, is to feel like I did when I
could roam the streets barefoot free and alive.
