The woods that travelled along the golf course were thick but she led him through them anyway, off the cart path, her high heels in one hand and the skirt of her fancy dress hiked up in the other. The kids, the family, the new bride and groom—everyone fell quickly out of mind and his irritation with her began to give way to something else… something he recognized like a lost friend.
Hope, he thought.
Or maybe expectation, at least.
It had been a while since he had felt either.
But only a minute into the woods, she stopped at a sunlit river. He watched her scan the shorelines left and right. He did the same, but this small bend in the river running through the course had no sightlines to the fairways or greens. When she spoke, he turned to look at her. She was lifting her dress over her head.
“Let’s put our hurt feelings aside for the next few minutes.”
Hope, he decided.
