about
In The Air Tonight.
Andre told me I was doing a cover song; a classic song we could redo, something everyone knows, something anyone can sing to, something epic, bouncy fun, moody, just a tune, but it had to be a good one. I responded, "U2?" Dre- "I don't do U2". Me- "Simon and Garfunkel?" Dre- "Nope" Me- "Carpenters?” Dre- “Ha ha ha ha ha ha!" I was serious.
So I'm driving home from a late night show, and "In The Air Tonight" comes on by Phil Collins. Everybody knows THIS song, even me! I text Dre. "In the Air Tonight". His response, "Now you're talking".
There are key elements that you can't lose in a cover. You can't stray too far away, but you want to make it your own. This is perhaps one of the most iconic rocks songs of all time with a key signature sound. What were we thinking?
One night fairly late, Dre and I were recording stuff… just noises and thumps and such.
We dragged out this old record player with a radio on it. It slowly warmed up. The radio fuzzed and popped, then a switch flipped and somewhere inside the record player turned.
The sound that came out made the hair on the back of my neck rise.
This is the sound you hear at the end of the song.
lyrics
I can feel it coming in the air tonight, Oh Lord
I've been waiting for this moment, all my life, Oh Lord
Can you feel it coming in the air tonight, Oh Lord, Oh Lord
Well, if you told me you were drowning
I would not lend a hand
I've seen your face before my friend
But I don't know if you know who I am
Well, I was there and I saw what you did
I saw it with my own two eyes
So you can wipe off the grin, I know where you've been
It's all been a pack of lies
And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, Oh Lord
I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, Oh Lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, Oh Lord, Oh Lord
And I've been waiting for this moment all my life, Oh Lord, Oh Lord
Well I remember, I remember don't worry
How could I ever forget, it's the first time, the last time we ever met
But I know the reason why you keep your silence up, no you don't fool me
The hurt doesn't show; but the pain still grows
It's no stranger to you or me
And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, Oh Lord...
