about

Silly Boy

One of the biggest lessons I learned during my stay in the schoolhouse is that teams make good records. It helps to listen and allow others to have input into the music.  There is no room for ego.

I liked this song from the get go, so when I sat down to play "Silly Boy" for Andre, I wasn't expecting him to tell me the bridge was missing something.  So I sat at the table where we'd normally eat to rewrite the bridge.  I sang the song through once, and wrote down "We figure out how, to make it pay, one thing's for certain, the end of life's curtain's gonna close on us all one day.”  It came out as fast as you just read it, and then I sang the bridge exactly how you hear it on the recording the minute I picked up my guitar.  I wish all epic bridges were as easy to write.

When Tom and I got to the bridge when we were recording the background vocals, I knew we were on to something.  "Silly silly silly silly boy" was Tom’s idea (again, good teams make good records!).  Tom naturally sang it in his excellent English accent.  It gave the song a bit of a Beatles flair to the chorus.

Andre sampled the "Omnichord" waltz beat.  You can hear a significant amount of outdoor percussion on this song.  Tom and I spent hours outside with a couple of mic's just banging sticks together to catch the reverb through the trees.  Man, what a sound.  You can hear cars traveling from left to right on headphones because they just happened to drive by while were hitting things outside.

The ending is one of those "Tom won't stop playing music" kind of endings, and that's fine because you can hear us playing our zippers nicely over the calming pads he was playing, and us talking outside.

I found that very calming.

lyrics

I saw her sitting there. She said have heard so many tales
I said hurry on back home she said home is where I roam, wind in my sails
Silly boy

I cast my eyes but stare, I see the truth is lurking there,
We all know true love is rare, that's why we're searching everywhere, ya everywhere
Silly boy

We figure out how, to make it pay
One things for certain, the end of life’s curtain's gonna close on us all one day

Fingers crossed that, our house of cards cant
blow over move over feel the change whispering your name

Ya we all know love can burn some embrace it others turn,
And the tally piles high open up and gather wide. to say good bye
Silly boy
